Bilharziasis – a rare case of haematuria

Mona Mohammad, Owais Khan.

Abstract
Bilharziasis, also known as Schistosomiasis, although rare worldwide, is common in many countries in Africa and pockets of the Middle East. There are five main species that cause infections in humans ie S. Mansoni, S, japonicum, S. Mekongi, S. guineensis and S. Haematobium. The first four are mainly responsible for disease in the intestines while S. Haematobium is responsible for urinary symptoms and this is the species that we are concerned with in this report. We report a case of a 25 year old male who presented with terminal haematuria. He was found to have urinary schistosomiasis and was treated appropriately.

Key words: haematuria, schistosomiasis
