Selected Body Circumferences and Cardiovascular Parameters among a Nigerian Community Dwellers

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are number one cause of death globally. The study assessed the relationship between neck, upper, and lower limbs circumferences and cardiovascular parameters among apparently healthy community dwellers in Ile- Ife.
Four hundred participants (175 males and 225 females) >40 years participated in the study. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured with sphygmomanometer; pulse rate was measured with stopwatch, circumferences of the neck, arm, forearm, waist, calf, and hip were measured with tape rule using standard protocol. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Alpha level was set at 0.05
There was a significant relationship between systolic blood pressure and each of neck circumference (r=0.208, p˂0.001), arm circumference (r=.262, p< 0.001), hip circumference (r=.256, p<0.001) and waist circumference (r=.224, p<0.001). There was significant a relationship between diastolic blood pressure and each of neck circumference (r=.251, p<0.001), forearm circumference (r=.230, p<0.001), and waist circumference (r=.191, p<0.001). The study observed further that neck circumference and arm circumference were predictor of systolic blood pressure (Systolic = 74.45 + 0.747 (NKC + 0.848 (Arm Cir); while neck circumference and forearm circumference are predictors of diastolic blood pressure (Diastolic= 43.916 + 0.637(NKC) + 0.686 (Forearm Circ)+.210(ArmCir)+ .050 (Calf Cir)
It can be concluded from the study that the higher the each of neck, arm, forearm, hip, and calf circumferences, the more possibility of an increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
