Abstract
Introduction: Stroke can occur at young age, perinatal (between 28 weeks gestation and 28 days of life) and childhood (between 29 days and 18 years of age). Childhood stroke is a rare event, with combined incidence of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke is estimated at 1.3 to 13 per 100.000 children in the UK. Risk factors of childhood stroke associated with arteriopathy, cardiac disorders, and infection.
Case Report: A 10 years old female child with arterial ischemic stroke. She presented to the hospital due to weakness half body on the right side and history difficult to speech suddenly. Physical examination revealed hemiparesis dekstra grade 4 and positive babinsky sign on the right. Her vital sign were normal. Initial complete blood count was normal. Brain CT scan (without contrast axial slice) revealed ischemic infarction in the left external capsule and left corona radiata. Brain MRA revealed chronic infarction suggesting embolic, involving left basal ganglia, territory of left lenticulo striata artery and significant stenosis at the proximal stem of left middle cerebral artery. She was given aspirin and neuroprotector. She recovered completely within a week and was discharged home.
Conclusion: Childhood stroke with risk factor arteriopathy strongly associated with recurrence, therefore sustainable follow up is needed.
