Study of mean platelet volume in Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in and around Lucknow (U.P.) district and its correlation with predictive parameters

Abstract
Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the correlation of Mean Platelet Count (MPV) and other parameters demographical parameters such as age, sex, BMI, dietary habit and clinical parameters like Platelet count, Total Leucocyte Count (TLC), Differential Leucocyte Count (DLC), Hemoglobin (Hb), Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) in type 2 diabetes mellitus cases and control.
Methods: Analyses performed for this study included100 subjects which included 50 T2DM cases and 50 non-diabetic controls for sugar estimation Fasting blood glucose (FBG), Random blood sugar (RBS), Post Prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) and Complete blood count (CBC) for platelet parameters of the same patients.
Results:
Our result revealed that MPV was significantly higher in the diabetic group as compared to the control group (p<0.001). No significant difference was observed for (Platelet count, TLC, DLC, Hb, HbA1c, Na and K) parameters. In the case of the group Lymphocytes too showed a significant positive correlation with MPV (r=0.49, p<0.001) while Neutrophils showed a significant negative correlation with MPV (r=-0.43, p=0.002). The Betas coefficients of Na and Group showed a significant impact on MPV change (p<0.05), which concludes that these two parameters are more important than others in estimating the MPV.

Conclusion: T2DM patients have higher MPV as compared to non-diabetics. A significant association was observed for few parameters such as age, BMI, Na and K but negative correlation with neutrophils. More studies are needed on a larger sample size to validate this study.
